So I’m working on a homebrew advanced background for a Knight character as the existing aristocrat and militarist backgrounds don’t fit it well. While the core rulebook gives you a squire and retainers as the backgrounds effect those would be considered holdings using the advanced Background system, so a different effect would make sense. My idea is to merge the Knight and Knight of the Order backgrounds for the homebrew. Here is the idea I have so far.
Skill Proficiencies: Animal Handling, plus one from among Athletics, Insight, Intimidation, Perception, Survival.
Tool Proficiencies: All of the tools necessary to maintain the health of your mount.
Languages: One of your choice
Equipment: A set of traveler’s clothes, a signet, banner, or seal representing your fealty or rank, and a pouch containing 10gp
You receive shelter and succor from members of the order to which you owe fealty and those who are sympathetic to its aims. If you serve a religious knightly order, you can gain aid from temples and other religious communities of your deity. Knights of civic orders can get help from the community – whether a lone settlement or a great nation that they serve, and knights of philosophical orders can find help from those they have aided in pursuit of their ideals, and those who share those ideals.
This help comes in the form of shelter and meals, and healing when appropriate, as well as occasionally risky assistance, such as a band of local citizens rallying to aid a sorely pressed knight in a fight, or those who support the order helping to smuggle a knight out of town when he or she is being hunted unjustly.
As it is dependent upon the good reputation of the order this help will not be offered by characters who have witnessed the knight demonstrating conduct which runs counter to that expected of a knight.
The three subtypes for the Knight advanced Background are Civic Order Knights, Religious Order Knights, and Philosophical Order Knights.
Civic Order Knights:
Skill Proficiency: History
Holdings: An emblem of chivalry denoting your fealty to your order or lord.
Keeper of the Peace:
Members of the faction your order serves or those who are sympathetic to its aims will often request your assistance in maintenance of the peace and protection of their communities. Turning down these requests without good cause is seen as unknightly conduct and will result in a loss of Knightly Regard with those requesting your aid.
Religious Order Knights:
Skill Proficiency: Religion
Holdings: A holy symbol and religious text of your religion.
Protector of the Faith:
Members of the religion your order serves or those sympathetic to its aims will often request your assistance in the protection of its holy sites, clergy, parishioners and the persecutions of its enemies. Turning down these requests without good cause is seen as unknightly conduct and will result in a loss of Knightly Regard with those requesting your aid.
Philosophical Order Knights:
Skill Proficiency: Arcana
Holdings: A journal, parchment, quill, and ink.
I’m not sure on the philosophy effect.
Rank 1: Knight Errant
Holdings: A mount
Rank 2: Knight of the Realm
Holdings: A Squire and 2 retainers
Rank 3: Knight of Renown
Holdings: Command of a squadron of Knights and their retainers
Rank 4: Grandmaster
Holdings: Command of your Knightly Order
This is all a work in progress, comments and critiques are welcome.January 12, 2021 at 3:46 pm#4490 0
